The sustainable seafood movement is on the rise and we’re proud that Pacific Dream Seafoods is at the forefront. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program advises businesses through its partnership program, helping transform the seafood marketplace in favor of environmentally responsible fisheries and aquaculture operations. Today, we’re proud to announce we’re the newest Seafood Watch partner.

By working with the Seafood Watch Business Partner team, Pacific Dream Seafoods will receive guidance on sustainable seafood selections to ensure exceptional quality while maintaining a commitment to the health of our oceans.

Seafood Watch empowers consumers and businesses to make choices for healthy oceans. Using science-based, peer reviewed methods, Seafood Watch accesses how wild-caught and farmed seafood affect the environment and provides recommendations which items are the Best Choices, Good Alternatives, and which ones to Avoid. We’re proud to share that the 100% of the seafood caught and sold by Pacific Dream Seafoods is either categorized as “Best Choice” or “Good Alternative.” Below are the details (direct from the Seafood Watch website) for each type of seafood sold by Pacific Dream Seafoods:

  1. Dungeness Crab. Dungeness crab caught in Washington with pots is a “Good Alternative.” The stocks are not overfished, but there are concerns about high fishing levels. The Washington fishery is known to entangle humpback whales, but these interactions are rare. While management was rated effective overall, some areas need improvement. In addition, impacts on seafloor habitats are a low concern, but more information is needed about ecosystem impacts.
  2. Sockeye Salmon. Sockeye salmon caught in Washington with reef nets during the early summer-run is a “Best Choice.” Most salmon populations running at this time of year are healthy. In addition, if salmon other than sockeye and pink are caught, they’re returned to the water alive. Management is also effective. Many salmon runs on the U.S. West Coast are augmented by large numbers of hatchery salmon, which could reduce the ability of wild populations to survive.
  3. Spot Prawns/Shrimp. Spot shrimp caught in British Columbia, Canada, with traps is a “Best Choice.” Spot shrimp stocks are healthy, and management is effective. There’s data that threatened quillback rockfish is caught in this fishery.

As a Seafood Watch partner, we join more than 150,000 business locations across North America whose seafood purchasing decisions are informed by Seafood Watch science. We’re proud to collaborate with this organization. Learn more about Seafood Watch and what you can do to help the ocean.
